Wolves success still sinking in, says coach James

Worcester News: PAUL JAMES: Success sinking in. PAUL JAMES: Success sinking in.

DIRECTOR of basketball Paul James says he is still getting to grips with the reality of Worcester Wolves reaching the British Basketball League Trophy final.

Wolves will be in Glasgow on Sunday, March 30, after defeating Sheffield Sharks 84-70 in Wednesday's semi-final second leg and 146-130 on aggregate.

They will now face either Glasgow Rocks or Cheshire Phoenix in their first BBL major final at the Scottish capital's Commonwealth Arena.

"I can't quite believe it's happened," James said. "I can remember sitting down with the owners when I first got here and saying what my goals would be for this team.

"I wanted to build the team year-on-year and get stronger and stronger and get us to semi-finals and a final within five years. We've achieved that now.

"We are going to savour this moment for now, we'll enjoy it and the guys will get a deserved few days off to rest their bones and we'll regroup next week, but I'm really proud of them."

Despite being 20 points up at one stage, Sheffield fought back to draw level before Worcester pulled away again, roared on by the University Arena crowd.

James added: "I can't say that I really enjoyed the game but nobody ever said getting to a final was easy. The guys played tremendously well in parts but we let our guard down for a split second and Sheffield showed their class by getting back into it.

"But I think the sixth man certainly were the crowd, they got into it just at the right time when they needed to and spurred us on to give us that bit more energy that we needed."

Wolves co-owner and president Mick Donovan said: "There have been many people involved in supporting the club in many different ways over the past 14 years.

"While this success can be attributed to the current team, we also realise that foundations have been put in place by the good work of so many others and we are delighted to be going to our first BBL final."
