City boss bemoans lack of transfer luck

CARL HEELEY: Missed out on a "big signing".

WORCESTER City manager Carl Heeley spoke of his frustration of constantly missing out on transfer targets as his thinning squad lost at Gainsborough.

Defensive options were limited before the game following Jamie Grimes’ recall by Kidderminster Harriers and with Richard Munday suffering a wrist injury against Telford.

Things went further downhill when left-back Tyler Weir hobbled off at Northolme.

“I think we need to add to the squad, but it’s just not that easy,” the City boss admitted.

“We’re constantly missing out on targets but we’re trying hard to add to the squad because it’s thread-bare.”

Heeley revealed the club again missed out on a "big signing" just 24 hours before kick-off and come full-time had little reason to be any more positive.

On the game he said: “I’m disappointed in the players. In the first-half we were better in every department, the game should have been out of sight by half-time.

“For some reason we felt the need to change what we were doing well and shoot ourselves in the foot.”

The 2-1 win saw Gainsborough leapfrog City in the Skrill North table, leaving Worcester perched just above the drop zone.

Heeley said: “I’m still confident because we’re in a better position than all of the teams below us – games in hand don’t mean anything.

“But until we can follow instructions for 90 minutes instead of 85 we won’t be seeing another run of five wins in six.

“We should have dealt with a 40-yard ball for the first goal, but the criminal thing is that it was a free header from a corner. Someone’s not done their job.

“We then get within eight yards of goal and consistently mis-kick things – we weren’t good enough in both penalty areas.”
