A YOUNG people's production of musical drama Footloose will get rolling next month thanks to people in Worcester digging their 1980s four-wheeled skates out of the back of their cupboard.

Following an appeal in your Worcester News, Perdiswell Young People's Leisure Club donated a set of skates to the Operatic and Dramatic Society Youth Section (WODYS) for use in their performance at the Swan Theatre next month.

The group's chairman - who is also producing the show - David Humphries said: "Once again the people of Worcester have kindly helped us out and we are very grateful for their support.

"We had lots of offers of skates and have been able to get the right style and size and colours."

Liv Gawad - who plays the role of Betty Blast in the musical - said she was hard at work getting the hang of the skates.

"I am more used to inline skates," she said.

"But I am sure it will be all right."

Development manager at Perdiswell Young People's Leisure Club Phil Weston said he was happy the organisation was able to support the group.

"We used to have a roller disco about 20 years ago and still have a lot of the skates," he said.

Footloose - best known as a 1984 film starring Kevin Bacon - is set in the 1980s and tells the story of Chicago teen Ren McCormack and his rebellion against stuffy authority figures who have banned dancing and rock music.

The production is on at the Swan from Tuesday, August 5 until Saturday, August 9.
